Myeloma Awareness Week 2005 - October 17-21, 2005
For Myeloma Awareness Week 2005, special emphasis will be placed on spreading one of the principal messages of the IMF: “Knowledge is Power."
By mobilizing one of the key components of the myeloma community, the support groups, the IMF will endeavor to reach those who are not yet aware of the education and support that the IMF provides free of charge to patients, caregivers and the medical community.
Support group members across the U.S. and around the world will be going to physicians’ offices, oncology clinics, community centers, and places of worship, spreading the word that help is available, and inviting those unfamiliar with their local support group to come to a meeting and learn more about this incurable but treatable cancer of the bone marrow.
Throughout 2005, the IMF has been implementing an outreach program targeting underserved, underinsured, and uninsured myeloma patients, their families, friends, and caregivers. A special project, supported by a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, focuses on African Americans and the need to be aware of the disease and its symptoms. Incidence rates among African Americans are twice that of Caucasians in the U.S.; and because the symptoms are similar to those of unrelated disorders, the disease is often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed.
The IMF's outreach effort will be strengthened and supported by the work of the IMF’s thousands of members during Myeloma Awareness Week and throughout the coming months. Armed with educational materials and information, IMF members will be out in force before, during, and after Myeloma Awareness Week 2005. Please help them spread the word that although this disease currently has no cure, treatment is available, and sufferers of myeloma are living longer and better than ever.
